Yerba Mate is an herb native to South America that is traditionally made into tea. It is often described as a beverage that is similar to coffee, tea, and chocolate as the yerba mate plant contains caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine - the substances found in coffee, tea, and chocolate, respectively. Yerba mate is a nutritional powerhouse as it is rich in vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants, and polyphenols. It may be used to help boost energy, improve mental health, increase focus, enhance physical performance, protect against certain types of cancers, decrease the risk of heart disease, increase good cholesterol, protect against infections, decrease weight and belly fat, boost the immune system, lower blood sugar levels, improve bone mineral density, prevent water retention (has a diuretic effect), and slows down aging and cell degeneration. Yerba mate may also be used to help with fatigue, depression, and chronic headaches.
