Dangshen, also known as Codonopsis pilosula, is a Chinese dried root sometimes referred to as the “poor man’s ginseng” considering it has similar properties to ginseng (although gentler) and is cheaper. Dangshen may be used to help strengthen the spleen, enhance Qi, improve digestion, boost immune system function, protect cancer patients from side effects of radiation treatment, regulate blood pressure, nourish the blood, reduce thirst, and tonify the lungs and improve respiration. It may also be used to help with weakness, loss of appetite and anorexia, chronic diarrhea, heart palpitations, diabetes, and asthma.
