5' Adenosine Monophosphate-activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) is an enzyme that plays an essential role in energy balance. In essence, AMPK is able to detect the level of energy (i.e. number of ATP molecules) in a cell and helps regulate responses when it gets too high or too low. Increasing AMPK activity can cause cells to stop storing fat (especially in the abdominal section) and to start burning it as energy.
