Listeriosis is a food-borne illness that is usually caused by eating foods such as deli meats, soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk, uncooked vegetables, and refrigerated seafood contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and headache. Listeriosis may also cause serious illness such as sepsis or meningitis in pregnant women and newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
