Krill oil is produced from Antarctic krill, a tiny crustacean that looks like shrimp. Krill is primarily consumed by whales. Krill oil is an excellent source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which are types of omega-3 fatty acids and is gaining popularity as a substitute for fish oil. Krill oil contains astaxanthin, a pigment not usually found in fish oil that has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Krill oil may be used to help decrease cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, decrease joint pain and symptoms of arthritis, lower levels of triglycerides, improve heart health, decrease symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and reduce menstrual period pain.
