Celery seeds (Apium graveolens), which come from wild celery plants (sometimes called Chinese celery), are commonly used as a cooking spice. Celery seeds are nutrient-rich, have antioxidant properties, and have been used in Eastern medicine for thousands of years. Celery seeds may be used to help promote red blood cell formation, support bone health, improve blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, calm the nerves, fight colds and flu, decrease water retention, lower blood pressure levels, decrease cholesterol levels, lower muscle spasms, and reduce insomnia. Celery seeds may also be used to help with arthritis and gout.
