Ayahuasca is a psychoactive drink made using the leaves of the Psychotria Viridis plant and the stalks of the Banisteriopsis Caapi vine. It was originally used for spiritual and religious purposes by ancient Amazonian tribes and is still used in regions of the Amazon for medicinal and spiritual purposes. Both the Psychotria Viridis and Banisteriopsis Caapi are known to have hallucinogenic properties. Psychotria Viridis contains N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a strong psychedelic compound, and Banisteriopsis Caapi contains β-carbolines, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which stops the body from breaking down DMT. Together, these plants form a powerful psychedelic drink that affects the central nervous system, leading to an altered state of consciousness and feelings of euphoria. Ayahuasca may be used to help support brain health, stimulate neural growth, as well as increase mindfulness and improve psychological well-being. It may also be used to help treat anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and addiction disorders.
