Wild yam is a plant that has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. The root contains a chemical called diosgenin, which can influence the production of several useful hormones, such as estrogen or dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). It may be used to help decrease symptoms of menopause, treat rheumatoid arthritis, protect the brain, improve cough, decrease the signs of aging, regulate blood sugar levels, and reduce cramps and muscular pain.
