Mycoplasma hominis is a strain of bacteria that is present in the vagina and is a cause of pelvic inflammatory disease as well as other genitourinary tract infections. It can also cause chorioamnionitis and postpartum fever. Mycoplasma hominis is one of the four types of organisms that are responsible for most clinically significant infections: mycoplasma pneumonia, mycoplasma hominis, mycoplasma genitalium, and ureaplasma species - for which the pathogenic potential in humans is certain. Mycoplasma hominis is an opportunistic mycoplasma which, like ureaplasma urealyticum, may form part of the commensal urogenital flora of the adult.
