Amitriptyline is an antidepressant agent with sedative effects. It works by affecting the balance of certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Amitriptyline may be used to help treat mental/mood disorders such as depression, improve mood, relieve anxiety, decrease pain (such as nerve pain), increase energy, and improve sleep.
