5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is produced naturally in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. It is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which can be converted into the hormone melatonin. 5-HTP may be used to help with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), insomnia, fibromyalgia, migraine, hot flashes, and weight loss.
