how do I know that the time is long enough on the timer for any IC? I"m new here and I may have missed that in the intro

Dom Daviau, the transfer time is already preset and optimized for selected device. The default transfer time shown when you start the IC is generally enough. Later, you can try adding more repeats when and see how that works for you.
