Red yeast rice is a traditional Chinese culinary and medicinal product made by fermenting rice with a specific type of yeast called Monascus purpureus. This fermentation process gives the rice a reddish color and produces compounds known as monacolins. One of the monacolins found in red yeast rice is monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the active ingredient in certain cholesterol-lowering medications, lovastatin. Red yeast rice may help manage cholesterol levels, lower bad cholesterol levels, improve overall lipid profiles, and improve heart health.
