Artemisia annua, also known as sweet wormwood, is an herb traditionally used in Chinese medicine to treat fever, inflammation, and malaria. In fact, Mrs. Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the application of artemisia annua to treat malaria. More than 400 compounds have been identified in the plant with more than 20 having antimalarial properties. Artemisia annua has the potential to improve the immune system and has also been used to help fight against cancer, leukemia, Lyme disease, co-infections (including ehrlichiosis and bartonellosis), babesiosis (or piroplasmosis), parasites, viruses, and fungi. It may also be used to purify the blood (as it binds to endotoxins), stimulate or slow down immune system reactions, reduce autoimmune reactions, decrease cramps, promote digestion, manage stomach ulcers, promote good microbial flora, and protect the intestinal wall. Artemisia annua may be used as a natural alternative to hydroxychloroquine (among others for antibiotic treatment of post-Lyme arthritis). Artemisia annua spreads easily and quickly throughout the body, including the brain.
