Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication. It may be used to treat bacterial infections of the heart, stomach, large intestine, liver, lungs, vagina, skin, brain, spinal cord, and joints. It may also be used to treat mild cases of C. difficile, giardiasis, trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite), and other protozoal infections. Metronidazole may also be used for dogs, cats, and horses.
