Butyrate is produced by healthy bacteria in the large intestine via the fermentation of soluble fiber. It is the primary fuel for cells of the large intestine, and is essential for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal lining and preventing "leaky gut." Butyrate also regulates gene expression in the cells of the large intestine, thus reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. Its ability to transform colorectal cancer cells back to a normal phenotype has been extensively documented. Butyrate activates the genes that are essential for maintaining the health and integrity of the connective tissue throughout the body. Butyrate should be considered in any case of digestive inflammation such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or IBS. Butyrate is also indicated in conditions beyond the digestive tract such as liver detoxification, cognitive function, and any neurological conditions. Dogs also have butyrate-producing bacteria as part of their microbiome. This product is appropriate for dogs with digestive disorders such as diarrhea, colitis, and constipation.
