Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is rich in nutrients, minerals, protein, carotenoids, and antioxidants. The main active ingredient in spirulina is phycocyanin, an antioxidant that gives the algae its dark blue colour. Health benefits associated with spirulina include weight loss, increased energy, and stimulation of the immune system. It may also be used to help with the removal of heavy metals and toxins from the body, lower cholesterol level, reduce inflammation, decrease blood pressure, reduce blood sugar level (type 2 diabetes), increase endurance for athletes, help muscular endurance, prevent recurring yeast infections, improve digestion and bowel health, and help fight allergies. Some evidence also suggests that spirulina has anti-cancer properties.
